New general-purpose LED light designed to replace screw-in incandescent, halogen, or compact fluorescent bulbs

LED lights designed to replace 40, 50 and 60 watt general-purpose screw-in incandescent, halogen, or compact fluorescent bulbs have been announced from several LED vendors.

  • Osram Sylvania has announced a new 12W LED bulb, a replacement for traditional 60W incandescent bulbs. The company said that the dimmable, Sylvania Ultra LED A-line bulb is an energy-efficient alternative to conventional incandescent, halogen and compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs.  See the complete article Here.
  • Royal Philips Electronics unveiled The 12-watt Endura LED, an LED bulb that will be mass-produced as a replacement for the common 60-watt light bulb. See the complete article Here.

  • Lighting Sciences Group announced a 60-watt replacement called the Definity A19 bulb, which gives off 770 lumens and consumes nine watts.  Details Here.

Why all of the recent announcements regarding incandescent light replacements?  The U. S. Department of Energy has sponsored the L Prize:

"The L Prize competition will substantially accelerate America's shift from inefficient, dated lighting products to innovative, high-performance products. Just as Thomas Edison transformed illumination over a century ago, the L Prize will drive innovation and market adoption."
